Geopark, as an innovation emerged in 21 century, has been welcome and supported by Chinese earth scientists and general public. The construction and development of Leiqiong geopark learned a lot from experience.

Leiqiong geopark consists of three parts: Haikou-Shishan Volcanic National Geopark, HainanProvince, Zhanjiang-Huguangyan National Geopark,GuangdongProvince, and Beihai-Weizhou Island Volcano National Geopaark, Guangxi. In terms of geology, all belong to Leiqiong Rift Volcanic belt. The geopark contains plenty of geologic remains which have recorded in light of volcanology the generation and evolution of a continent marginal rift; embraces many types of well preserved volcano and rich in volcanic landscapes such as lava tunnels. It is highly spoken as a natural exhibition garden for Quaternary volcano and basalt. The geopark has concentrated maar clusters, and become the place whereMaarLakewas first studied inChina; also has become the research base for cooperative study of Chinese and German scientists. There are developed various seashore landforms constructed of typical volcanic rocks in the geopark.

This talk will discuss the role earth scientists have played in the construction of the Geopark.
